It was one of the earliest format of professional video cassette produced, dating back to 1969. U-matic tapes allowed professional and corporate videographers a convenient portable package for dealing with videotape. Those big 3/4” videotapes that were the videocassettes available for corporate productions back in the 1970s. Big sturdy tapes and large, expensive tape player/recorder units were widely used up until the 1980s.
