Printing and Binding Scrapbooks

My approach to printing a scrapbook is to consider the materials, and to decide if a vintage look would be more appropriate than a contemporary approach. For example, the scrapbook that we made from WWII carticles for one client was printed on a nice antique style paper. This paper had mineral specks dispersed throughout and lookes really cool.

The scrapbook that we are showing below was printed on Astral Parchment paper. This is a pretty cream colored paper and made the old news articles really look nice.

Another scrapbook project we worked on involved printing a family history document. This book was printed on heavy bond cotton paper to give it punch and really make the information pop off the page.

Part of the challenge in selecting a paper that will set the mood of the piece you are printing is today’s economy. A lot of paper manufacturers do not print llow demand papers; they cannpt afford to. Thus, getting the paper you want from your local print shop may prove challenging. This was the case as we went back to ask for more Astral parchment for the WWII scrapbook project. It was no longer available. This forced us to make a hasty, albeit very satisfying, solution to get our customer’s book finished after a long delay due to searching for paper.

The next challenge you will face after you get your scrapbook printed is where to get it bound. Most print shops do not bind leather books; your local printer might be able to point you in the right direction though.

We had to cross this bridge on our first scrapbook printing project. We foudn a really cool book binding shop in Columbia, SC named Miller’s Bookbinding. Mr. Larry Miller has been binding books for over 50 years. His shop looks like a museum showcasing manufacturing equipment from yesteryear. It was a delight to tour his shop and to meet him and his son in law, who is learning the craft from the master to continue the business into the future.

Miller’s bookbinding does work for clients all over the US. They can be reached at 803.739.0971.

Another source of scrapbook supplies for larger materials (up to 18”X24” pages) is Album Source at www.albumsource.com. They carry a complete line of scrapbook and photo albumm supplies.
